S'mores Indoors Simple Recipe

S’mores are one of my all time favorite snacks. I think it has to do with the events associated with eating them—almost always including a campfire, one of my all time favorite things. Elizabeth asked me to do a guest post on a snack or dessert since she was down with one mean sinus infection and unable to bake up a dessert to share here and I thought of these.

I remember one fall day I was hungry for a good sugary treat. We do not keep sweets around the house so I was grasping for something quick, simple and sweet to make. I remembered we had ingredients for S'mores left over from our recent camp fire. I have heard you can make them in the microwave, but we do not have one. So I went with the toaster oven.

I gathered my basic ingredients: graham crackers, marshmallows, and chocolate bars (purchased at CVS sale with coupons and extra bucks so free S'mores).

I split the graham crackers and chocolate bars putting two squares of chocolate on each of two halves of crackers.

I "butterflied" the marshmallows by cutting most of the way thru with a sharp knife. I thought they would cook faster and thru better this way. Placing them on top of the chocolate with the inside down helped them stay in place because they were sticky.

I had turned the oven on 350 degrees as I prepared the S'mores. When they were ready I put them in and turned up the temp by about 50 degrees--just so it would be heating and the top element, directly over the marshmallows, would heat and brown them (the broiler seemed to brown and not soften the marshmallows).

I kept on eye on them and in within just a minute or two they were toasty brown. I would miss the browning on the marshmallows it I had used a microwave. The graham cracker got just a little brown on the edges, but it didn't affect the taste much at all. I think I will use a little lower temp next time—perhaps preheat to 325 and turn it up to 350 when I pop them in.

They were really soft and warm. Just perfect for my sweet craving. This would be a great quick snack to make with children—just be aware that they come out very hot. If you do not have chocolate bars, we have used chocolate chips. And mini marshmallows would be great mixed with the chips.
