If possible, try to collect several sizes. You will be most efficient and get the best final product by using a size that matches your bowl. (For some recipes which require egg whites to be beaten to stiff peaks, if you are doing that by hand, you want to use a platter rather than a bowl.)
As with all kitchen equipment, these are available at many price points. The higher the quality, the longer they will last, but even a dollar store whisk should work well for a long time. The whisks with more wires whip better than ones with just a few -- it makes a world of difference. So if you can, invest in ones with many wires, like the one pictured here.
